Deutsche Börse takes over Swiss firm Crypto Finance
German stock exchange operator Deutsche Börse on Tuesday acquired a majority stake in renowned Swiss independent crypto firm Crypto Finance, founded by Jan Brzezek in 2017.
The operator said that “with an investment in the moderate three-digit CHF million range”, it will hold a two-thirds stake in Crypto Finance's capital. It added the remaining shares will remain with the existing investors, including Brzezek, who will continue to run the company.
The transaction, subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2021.
Crypto Finance provides trading, custody and investment in digital assets. Deutsche Börse has been stepping up its crypto product offering significantly in recent months, in particular with a DLT-based platform for the creation of serial marketplaces 360X and crypto exchange-traded notes. The group said the acquisition creates a direct entry point for investments in more than 200 digital assets, including post-trade services such as custody.
Deutsche Börse is planning to make the Crypto Finance offering accessible to participants via its established platforms with the aim of building a “neutral, transparent and highly scalable digital asset ecosystem under European regulation.”
“Digital assets will change the financial industry. More and more established financial institutions want to become active in this new asset class and are looking for a trustworthy partner,” noted Thomas Book, Director Trading & Clearing at Deutsche Börse, in a statement.
Commenting on the transaction, Crypto Finance's CEO and founder Brzezek, said he was “happy to work with a neutral partner like Deutsche Börse, who brings trust, reputation and expertise in traditional financial market infrastructure.”
