Esma’s board of supervisors have listed potential candidates for the chair position, starting 1 April 2021. Maria-Luis Albuquerque, former finance minister of Portugal, Carmine Di Noia, commissioner of Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB), Italy; and Verena Ross, executive director of Esma have thrown their hat into the ring.

ESMA stated that the shortlisted candidates were selected based on their merit, skills, knowledge of financial market participants and markets and relevant financial supervision and regulation experience, following an open selection procedure. The Council of European Union will appoint the Chair, following confirmation by the Parliament.
